This is Sara Wanie’s husband Martin Gardea. On our first date, March 11, 2012, we walked in the front doors of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and never looked back. This set the creative footprint for our relationship. San Francisco was a special place for many reasons to us. Galleries, museums, and walks around the city filled our everyday.

Shortly after I met Sara she mentioned that Huntington’s disease runs in her family and that she has a 50/50 chance of inheriting it. She also mentioned that her younger sister was diagnosed with a rare version of Huntington’s disease; Juveniles HD. In the beginning there was a chance of inheriting this, but now it’s a reality. Sara has always been the creative type always moving forward and not stopping to take a step back.

In 2003, she received her BFA in Painting from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and her MFA in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) in 2009. After graduate school, Sara was employed at SFAI in the Student Affairs department helping students build and create portfolios, resumes, artists statements, and proposals. She also taught Intro to Collage for adult continuing education.

In 2015, we decided to leave the Bay Area to head towards the Midwest. Sara wanted to be closer to her family in Wisconsin as Huntington’s was taking a toll on her younger sister Erin. On September 12, 2015 we got married at House on the Rock in Spring Green, Wisconsin. Shortly afterwords we moved to Chicago, IL. On April 9, 2021 Sara was tested positive for Huntington’s Disease. Between then and now there has been many doctors appointments.

As of now there isn’t a cure for Huntington’s disease but, with the support of friends and family, I reached out to some artist friends to donate a piece of artwork and all the proceeds will go directly to the HDSA's Upper Great Lakes Region. The responses have been unconditional. Forever thankful for this community. Thank you everyone.

Sara Wanie, you are my favorite love song.
